Colonials defeat Syracuse 5-1

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The Robert Morris took advantage of three Allie Munroe minors en-route to a 5-1 win over Syracuse at the Tennity Ice Pavilion on Saturday afternoon.

The first was a period of momentum swings, as each team tried to take the upper hand. Maddi Welch and Lauren Bailey exchanged save after save on opportunities early, until Natalie Marcuzzi opened the scoring after firing a shot on net from below the goal line that went off the pads of Maddi Welch and in at 19:08. The goal was scored eight seconds during an overlap of Emily Curlett’s roughing and an Emma Polaski hooking minors.

Special teams made the difference in the third period as markers from Curlett and Amber Rennie gave the Colonials a 3-0 lead with 12 minutes elapsed in the frame. Syracuse co-captain Allie Munroe was nabbed for a pair of penalties that sophomore Anjelica Diffendal drew on the senior. Curlett fired a shot from the circle that beat Welch, as Rennie grabbed a Lexi Templeman rebound and fired it into the net.

Lindsay Eastwood took advantage of a Marcuzzi hooking minor, getting the Orange within two at 5:12 of the final stanza on a shot from the left circle that beat Bailey’s glove to the post. Another penalty on Munroe lead to the Colonials 3rd converted opportunity of the afternoon, as Sadowy tapped a Sarah Quaranta centering pass home. Templeman iced the game with a short-handed goal at 18:53.
