Hempfield Area defeats Plum 9-1 Thursday

GREENSBURG, PA. — Eight different Hempfield Area players filled the net as the Spartans defeated the the Plum Mustangs 9-1 on Thursday night at Kirk S. Nevin Arena. Aided Dunlap scored twice for the Spartans in the affair.

The Spartans came out swinging in the first as goals by Caden Horton, Hunter Smiles and Caden Spehar opened up a 3-0 lead before the first four minutes expired.  Tristan Lloyd’s tally with under four to go in the frame gave Hempfield Area a 4-0 advantage heading into the second.

Sam Pine replaced starter Joe Miller in net for the Mustangs at the beginning of the second, and Tyler Planey extended the lead to 5-0 early in the second before a Zachary Ridilla short-handed goal and Aiden Dunlap marker grew the lead to seven. Nick McMasters, who returned from an injury after blocking a shot block in the first, gave the Mustangs a late goal in the frame.

Nick Bruno scored in the third period for the Spartans while Dunlop added his second later in the frame.

McMasters was the recipient of a second hit behind the net in the waning minutes, and was helped off the ice once again.

Matthew Overdorff started in net for Hempfield Area, extending his record with the win to 4-0 with a sparkling 1.25 goals against average.

Hempfield heads to Gibsonia for a date with the Hampton Talbots on Monday, Feb 1. The matchup from Frozen Pond Arena begins at 9:10 p.m. Plum faces off with Shaler at Alpha Ice Complex on Tuesday, Feb 2. The puck drop from Harmar Township is scheduled for 7:20.
