Hockey’s Headwaters: Murovich heating up in Atlanta

Happy Halloween! Welcome to Hockey’s Headwaters for the week ending Oct. 30. As always, I’m here to give you an update on the players that have passed through the many amateur rinks that call our corner of the state home.

HEADWATERS PLAYER OF THE WEEK

Mount Lebanon native Tyler Murovich was an absoulute force this past week for the Atlanta Gladiators of the ECHL. The 26-year-old forward scored three goals and added an assist in three games for the first-place Gladiators. His tally with 4:37 left in the third period of Friday nights game in Orlando stood as the game winner. Murovich has a three-game goal scoring streak heading into next week’s matchups.

Murovich is in his second stint with the Gladiators, who play in Duluth, Georgia, a northwest suburb. He played there from 2011 to 2013, before returning at the end of the 2014-15 season. He set a career professional high with 19 goals in 2015-16.

05_nhl_shield-svgThe senior circuit had a little bit of Burgh Hockey flair this week, with the showdown between Columbus Blue Jackets forward Brandon Saad and Anaheim Ducks goaltender John Gibson taking center stage. The matchup, which took place Saturday, saw the 24-year-old winger from Pine-Richland put two goals behind the netminder from Whitehall. Saad added a goal and an assist the remainder of the week.

Vincent Trocheck scored a goal and added an assist for the Florida Panthers in their 5-2 win over Detroit. … J.T. Miller of the New York Rangers registered two assists in a 5-2 win over Boston Tuesday night.

ahl_logo_american_hockey_leagueRiley Barber scored a goal and added two assists for the Hershey Bears of the AHL this past week. His tally in the second period against the Binghamton Senators was the game winner in the 7-2 rout.

Former Robert Morris standout Cody Wydo picked a couple of apples this week, registering two assists in the Wheeling Nailers victory at Kalamazoo on Friday and a single assist on the other side of the home-and-home series with the K-Wings on Saturday night.

Wydo’s former RMU teammate Adam Brace continues to produce for the Orlando Solar Bears, adding three assists this past weekend.

It was a big assist week for former RMU players, as forward Jeff Jones tallied two assists for the Huntsville Havoc this past Saturday.

Andrew Blazek, the former Robert Morris and Pittsburgh Hornets defenseman, scored a power play goal for the Aalborg Pirates. … Greg Gibson, another former Colonial, has six goals and six assists in 14 games for Starbulls Rosenheim of the DEL2. Greg picked up a goal and two assists this week.

screen-shot-2016-10-17-at-12-08-15-pmRebecca Vint scored a power play goal for the Brampton Thunder. The 2014-15 Robert Morris captain scored the second goal in her team’s 2-0 shutout over Toronto.

ncaa-logoUpper St. Clair native and former Pittsburgh Hornets forward Luke Stork scored two goals for the Ohio State Buckeyes in a 10-2 win over Niagara on Friday. The junior forward had only scored two goals once in his collegiate career, against Penn State as a freshman.

Amarillo Bulls forwards Brendan Walkom and Jonathan Dagnal each registered a goal this past week. … Quaker Valley grad Adam Pilewicz registered a goal and Latrobe standout Dalton Hunter added three assists for the Johnstown Tomahawks.
