Keller’s buzzer-beater lifts South Fayette over Mars

WARRENDALE, Pa. — Alex Keller scored twice, including a breakaway goal with a half-second remaining on the clock to give South Fayette a 5-4 regulation victory over Mars on Monday at Baierl Ice Complex.

Sean Newman opened up the scoring for the Planets, beating Brandon Timmins in-close at 8:35 of the first period. The two teams battled in the period, and shots out of the first were 6-5 South Fayette.

Scoring opened up in the second, as Keller’s short-handed goal gave the Lions a hard-earned tie at 1:58. Hudson Finn and Joseph Trinkala exchanged goals halfway through the period, and the teams were tied 2-2 at the cut.

The third was a gun-slingers duel as South Fayette took their first lead of the contest 33 seconds into the third, but it was short lived as Keegan Szczerba’s tally was bested by Nick Crowley’s goal a mere 39 seconds later. Luke Raymundo gave Mars a 4-3 lead for a total of 61 seconds before Ethan Szymanski tied things up for the Lions late.

Ryder Finn started for Mars and stopped 20-of-25, Timmons stopped 26-of-30 for South Fayette.
