Penguins Cup finals begin tonight

Plum goaltender Sergio Benitez. -- BRIAN MITCHELL

Four champions will be named this week at UMPC Lemieux Sports Complex in Cranberry Township, as the Penguins Cup finals will take place Tuesday and Wednesday evenings.

On Tuesday, Indiana will play Franklin Regional at 5:30 p.m. in the Class A final and Latrobe will play Plum at 8:30 p.m. in the Class AA final.

Franklin Regional is the returning champions in Class A and boasts the classification’s leading scorer in Jamie Mauro, but Indiana burst onto the scene thanks to strong play from forward Pat O’Neal, who has 13 points in three playoff games.

Plum is a veteran squad with a young backstop in goaltender Sergio Benitez, but the young netminder has a .915 save percentage in the postseason. Latrobe has used a balanced attack to average over five goals per game in the playoffs and make a run from the No. 4 spot in the East to the final.

On Wednesday, Meadville and Carrick will clash in the Division 2 championship at 5:30 p.m., while Pittsburgh Central Catholic will meet Peters Township in the Class AAA final at 8:30 p.m.

All games will be streamed live on MSA Sports Network.

The three Penguins Cup winners in Class A, AA and AAA will move onto the Pennsylvania Cup, which will be held Saturday at RMU Island Sports Center. Those teams will play the Flyers Cup winners in each classification.
