Former Robert Morris captain Cody Wydo has signed a one-year contract with the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins of the American Hockey League, the team announced Wednesday. The Penguins are the top minor-league affiliate of the Pittsburgh Penguins.

Wydo, 26, left RMU as the Colonials’ all-time leading scorer in 2015. Since then, he’s played professionally in the Pittsburgh organization, playing in parts of three seasons with the Wheeling Nailers in the ECHL. He made his AHL debut in on April 9 and played in three games while scoring a goal with Wilkes-Barre/Scranton last season.

He led the Nailers with 30 goals and 60 points last season while playing 70 games with Wheeling, which were professional highs in all three categories. He also topped all Nailers with 15 power-play goals. No other player had more than six.

Wilkes-Barre/Scranton head coach Clark Donatelli was the head coach of the Nailers when Wydo was first signed out of college in the spring of 2015. Since then, he’s moved up to Wilkes-Barre/Scranton, where he will again coach Wydo.

He finished his Robert Morris career with 150 points in 151 games and was a finalist for the Hobey Baker Award in 2015. Wydo is a native of Southgate, Michigan. The terms of his contract were not released.
