Tempers flare as Plum tops Armstrong to start 2-0

NEW KENSINGTON, Pa. — Logan Schlegel netted two as the Plum Mustangs won their home opener by defeating the Armstrong Riverhawks, 4-1 on Monday night.

The Riverhawks got into trouble early in the first period after a five-minute major for crosschecking followed shortly after by a two-minute minor for hooking.

Parker Gable beat Armstrong goaltender Gavin Grafton on the two-man advantage for Plum’s first goal and the Mustangs never relinquished the lead.

Schlegel added his pair and then Nic Pushic scored the fourth goal for the Mustangs late in the third period on a shorthanded breakaway.

Noah Oliver got the lone goal for the Riverhawks wth 1:12 remaining in the third period.

Then things got out of hand.

Referees called the game with 33.3 seconds remaining when both teams started to get hot after a scary situation that involved multiple game misconducts.

Grafton stopped 22 of 26 in goal for Armstrong while Sam Pine got the win for Plum by turning aside 21 of 22.
