Notes from the rink: Howard nominated for Dapper Dan award

Robert Morris senior forward and alternate captain Brittany Howard has been nominated for the 2017 Dapper Dan Sportswoman of the Year award.

Howard, 23, leads College Hockey America conference with 17 goals and 11 assists, and has accrued four game-winning goals for Robert Morris in the 2017-18 season.

She was a 2017 nominee for the Patty Kazmaier Award, which is given to the top female hockey player in college hockey. Howard is the returning CHA Player of the Year and the conference’s scoring champion.

She is the first Colonials player of any sport to be nominated for the award since 2012. Voting is open until January 10 at http://promo.post-gazette.com/dapperdan.

JENNY, MAROTTE HONORED

On the men’s side, freshman defenseman Nick Jenny and sophomore goaltender Francis Marotte were named Atlantic Hockey Rookie and Goaltender of the Week.

Jenny netted his first career goal in second period the opening game of the Three Rivers Classic, a 5-0 Robert Morris win over Lake Superior State on Friday. He added an assist on fellow rookie Ryley Risling’s second period goal on Saturday.

Marotte held the Lakers scoreless on Friday before allowing two goals to the Friars on Saturday, stopping 47 of the 49 shots he faced on the weekend. The effort on Friday was his third shutout of the season.
