West Allegheny defeats Hempfield 5-2

GREENSBURG, Pa. – The West Allegheny Indians outpaced the Hempfield Spartans to come away with a 5-2 victory Monday night at Kirk S. Nevin Arena.

TJ Boykin opened the scoring for the Indians halfway through the first period. West Allegheny increased their lead to two goals after Gabe Lauff found the back of the net.

The Indians kept up their fast attack heading into the second period with Shane Nolan, who was awarded the game winner, scoring at 1:59, and Tyler Howcroft netting his 7th goal of the season at 3:49. Nick Bandi ended the scoring for West Allegheny which sent Hempfield’s starting netminder, Joe Behler, to the bench with 9:47 remaining in the period. Behler’s replacement, Matt Overdorff, proved to be the spark Hempfield needed as the Spartans cracked down on defense and quickly got a goal from Zach Ridilla.

Aiden Dunlap scored the lone goal in the final period for Hempfield.

Josh Ferry stood tall in net for West Allegheny, stopping 20 of 22 shots on goal. Joe Behler ended his night stopping 10 of 15 shots on goal while Matt Overdorff finished the game stopping all 9 shots he faced.

 

 

 

UP NEXT:

Hempfield will finish off a three game homestand on Monday, Dec 2, when the Mars Planets visit Nevin Arena. The Spartans will then head up 66 to Pittsburgh Ice Arena on Monday, Dec 9 to play the Plum Mustangs before finishing the first half of the season at home against the Penn-Trafford Warriors on Thursday, Dec 12.

West Allegheny gets a two week break to prepare for a hot Greater Latrobe team. The Indians will host the Wildcats on Monday, Dec 9, at the RMU Island Sports Center. West Allegheny will then have two games the following week to finish the first half of the season; they will host the South Fayette Lions on Monday, Dec 16, before traveling to Baierl Ice Complex to play the Quaker Valley Quakers on Thursday, Dec 19.
