Aiden Dunlap’s OT goal sends Hempfield over Plum, 4-3

NEW KENSINGTON, Pa. — The Hempfield Spartans prevailed over the Plum Mustangs, 4-3, Monday night during the first round of the 2020 PIHL Class-2A Penguins Cup Playoffs at Pittsburgh Ice Arena.

Aiden Dunlap scored at the 7:20 mark in overtime to lift the Spartans past the Mustangs.

Plum’s Logan Schlegel recorded his second goal of the game with 1:17 left in the third period. Schlegel also scored the lone goal in the second period to get the Mustangs within one.

Nic Pushic opened the scoring for the Mustangs, giving them their only lead at 4:10 of the first period.

Hempfield then put the pressure on as they received three goal from Hunter Smiles, Tristan Lloyd and Trent Gray.

Sam Pine started in net for the Mustangs, stopping 41 of 45 shots on net. On the opposite end, it was Joe Behler in net for the Spartans. Behler ended his night stopping 20 of 23 shots on net.

With the win, Hempfield moves on to the next round where they will play Greater Latrobe in the Semifinals at RMU Island Sports Center on Wednesday, March 11, at 7 pm.
