RICHLAND TWP., Pa. — Matt Traczynski scored four goals to lead Hempfield to a 7-3 victory over Hampton and into the 2020 PIHL playoffs.
The Spartans, needing two points to pass Franklin Regional for second place in Class-2A Southeast, never trailed in the contest.
Traczynski started the scoring just 1:15 into the contest. Hampton’s Ethan Varley and Hempfield’s Zach Ridilla traded goals late in the opening period before Traczynski struck again 2:31 into the second period on another feed from Christian Konieczka, who finished with four assists.
Aiden Dunlap extended the Hempfield lead before Varley struck again for Hampton at 10:16. Under two minutes later, Traczynski then finished his hat trick.
The Talbots trailed by three entering the third and things quickly got worse. Trent Gray scored 21 seconds into the final frame and then Traczynski scored his fourth 21 seconds later. Traczynski assisted Gray’s tally for five points on the night. Gray and Ridilla each had a goal and an assist.
Luke Reiser scored once more for Hampton, but it was too little, too late.
Joe Behler stopped 25 of 28 in net for Hempfield while Jake McGee turned aside 26 of 33 in the losing effort for the Talbots.
