Hempfield knocks off Quaker Valley, 8-5; advances to second round

HARMAR TWP., Pa. — The Hempfield Spartans and Quaker Valley Quakers fought for a spot in the Class-AA quarterfinals Tuesday night at Alpha Ice Complex, where Hempfield advanced by a score of 8-5, thanks to a pair of goals from Aiden Edwards.

The high-scoring affair got started from puck-drop, asDaniel Fagan got the scoring started for Quaker Valley 44 seconds in and Christian Konieczka answered for the Spartans at the 1:32 mark.

The back-and-forth nature continued as Jared Gerger gave Hempfield the lead before Dylan Roebuck took it back for the Quakers with two of his own goals. Edwards and Daniel Pronin combined to take the lead back from Quaker Valley to go into the first intermission with the 4-3 lead.

In the second period, each team traded goals, with Roebuck tying the game 4-4 with his hat trick. The Quakers had scored four goals on four shots. Unfortunately for Quaker Valley, that was all the excitement they would have, as Edwards netted his second of the game to take the lead back again for Hempfield, a lead the Spartans would not relinquish.

Pronin got his second goal for Hempfield and Aiden Dunlap added a tally before Matthew Bartus put in an empty net goal. The Quakers managed one more goal by Christopher Barefoot, but ultimately fell, 8-5.

Hempfield will play Pine-Richland next Monday, March 4 at 7:30 p.m. at Baierl Ice Complex.
