The Robert Morris Colonials faced their stiffest test of the season Friday and came away with a 3-3 draw against the No. 5-ranked Clarkson Golden Knights at the Windjammer Tournament in Burlington, Vermont.
Already with a number of late-game goals under her belt this season defender Kirsten Welsh was the heroine again for Robert Morris, as she scored the game-tying goal with just 31 seconds remaining in the third period.
Welsh was involved in all three Colonials goals. She assisted Brittany Howard’s last-second second-period goal and scored a power-play goal in the first period on a feed from Maggie LaGue.
She now has eight goals on the season, which is second on the team behind Howard and tops among defenders in all of NCAA.
Because of the format of the tournament, a winner had to be decided, and Clarkson won a shootout to advance to the finals on Saturday. Robert Morris will play St. Cloud State in the third-place game at 4 p.m.
