NEVILLE TWP., Pa. — The Robert Morris Colonials were again unable to sustain a full 60 minutes of hockey, falling to the Minnesota State University Mavericks on Saturday 2-1.
An uneventful first period ended scoreless after both teams were unable to capitalize on multiple power play opportunities.
Jaycee Gebhard extended her point streak to 10 games with a power play goal halfway into the second period. Amber Rennie and Lexi Templeman got the helpers on the goal that gave the Colonials a 1-0 lead. Gebhard appeared to have added another power play goal towards the end of the period, but it was ruled no goal after a lengthy review.
While the Colonials dominated the shot category in the second period 20-5, they weren’t able to tally a second goal. First-year Maverick goalie Abigail Levy had a strong game stopping 33 shots.
The Colonials faltered in the third period- the same one they thrived in the night prior. After co-captain Kirsten Welsh took her second penalty of the game Brittyn Fleming blew past the defense and was able to place a shot over Arielle DeSmet’s shoulder to tie the game at one. Rebekah Kolstad later blocked a point shot and was able to carry the puck down the ice, blasting a shot from the blueline that DeSmet was unable to shrug off. A late flurry from the Colonials yielded no results as the Mavericks held on late to secure the victory.
The Colonials will host a two-game series against Cornell at Colonials Arena on Nov. 23-24. Both games will start at 3:05 p.m.
