New Pa. COVID-19 Restrictions Suspend High School, Youth Sports 3 Weeks

Pennsylvania Governor Tom Wolf issued new coronavirus restrictions for the state on Thursday, which includes a three-week suspension of all K-12 and youth sports until Monday, Jan. 4, 2021 at 8 a.m.

The suspension also includes no indoor dining and the closure of gyms, movie theaters, and casinos. The changes will not impact collegiate and professional sports.

The changes were made in response to continue increase is COVID-19 cases, hospitalizations and deaths in the sate. Thursday marked the fifth time in eight days that Pennsylvania reported over 10,000 new daily cases.

“With these measures in place, we hope to accomplish three goals,” Wolf said in a press release. “First, stop the devastating spread of COVID-19 in the commonwealth. Second, keep our hospitals and health care workers from becoming overwhelmed. And third, help Pennsylvanians get through the holiday season – and closer to a widely available vaccine – as safely as possible.

The PIHL website does not show any varsity games postponed Thursday, but it is assumed that they will be the last games played until the suspension is lifted on Jan 4.
