The Tigers fired three past Francis Marotte, from Gabe Valenzuela, Abbott Girduckis, and Bryson Traptow in the second to take two-goal lead into the third.
Jordan Peacock scored to signal a switch of Marotte for senior Andrew Pikul, who faced 9 shots.
The Colonials closed the gap with goals from Timmy Moore and the first of the season for Alex Dagnal.
Both teams will return to RMU Island Sports Center tomorrow for a rematch at 7:05 p.m. with the final Skate with the Colonials of 2017-18 after the game.
