RMU’s all-time leading scorer Brady Ferguson is on the Toronto Maple Leafs’ NHL training camp roster, the team announced on Wednesday.
Ferguson got his first taste of professional hockey last spring with the Maple Leafs’ AHL affiliate, the Toronto Marlies. He tallied four assists in five games after joining the team. Ferguson is currently signed to an AHL contract with the Marlies for the upcoming season, but has earned the opportunity to showcase his skills for NHL management in training camp.
Ferguson has been grouped with other Leafs’ prospects over the summer on multiple occasions. He participated in the team’s prospect development camp in June, partaking in various practices and intra-squad scrimmages. Last week, he competed in the team’s rookie tournament, facing off against prospects from Ottawa and Montreal.
Ferguson is the latest former Colonial to earn such an opportunity. His former RMU teammates including Zac Lynch (Florida), Brandon Denham and Tyson Wilson (Winnipeg) also took part in NHL training camps in recent years. RMU has yet to have an alum skate in a regular season NHL game, but former captain Furman South made his regular season NHL debut as an official last season.
The Leafs’ training camp begins on Sept. 14 in Niagara Falls, Ontario.
The current Colonials squad’s season officially begins October 12, when they will face off with Bowling Green at the Island Sports Center at 7:05 pm.
