Robert Morris head coach Derek Schooley has signed a three-year contract extension that will keep him at the school through the 2022-23 season, the university announced on Tuesday.
Schooley, 46, is the only head coach the program has ever had and is entering his 14th season this fall. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.
“We are thrilled to extend Derek’s contract and to ensure that he will remain a Colonial for a long time,” athletic director Craig Coleman said. “As the founding coach of our men’s hockey program, he continues to push the program to greater heights, and the sky is the limit.”
Since the inaugural season in 2004-05, Schooley and RMU have a 213-205-58 record and have made one NCAA Tournament appearance. They’ve also won two Atlantic Hockey Conference regular-season titles. The Colonials have made it to the AHC Final Four in Rochester, New York four straight seasons.
“I am honored and humbled every day to lead this program,” Schooley said. “We could not have done it without the dedication of great staff members, players and alumni. I look forward to continuing the success we have built over the past thirteen years.”
Before Schooley came to Robert Morris, he was an assistant coach for Air Force, Cornell and with the USHL’s Chicago Freese. He immediately went from playing to coaching in 1996-97, capping off a three-year professional career with stops in the ECHL and Colonial Hockey League. A defenseman, Schooley played three years at Western Michigan. He is a St. Louis native.
