USA Hockey held it’s women’s national festival this week in Lake Placid, N.Y. and two players with local ties participated in the camp that will help determine national teams for the 2018-19 season.

Sewickley native Maddie Mills will be participating in the under-22 camp and Pens Elite alumna Lauren Bernard will participate in the u-18 camp.

USA Hockey invited 31 players to try out for the u-18 team, which will be cut down to a 22 player roster. The over-18 portion of the festival included 44 players that were been split into two teams. USA Hockey will create one roster from that group as well. Both teams will travel to Calgary to compete against Hockey Canada Aug. 16-19.

Mills will be entering her sophomore year at Cornell University. As a freshman, she was named the Ivy League Rookie of the Year. Mills will be looking to improve on her already prolific offensive season after finishing second on the team in scoring with 18 goals and 33 points. Prior to attending Cornell, she won four consecutive USA Hockey national championships with Shattuck-St. Mary’s.

Lauren Bernard of Madison, OH played with the Pens Elite u-12, u-14 and u-16 teams before joining the Selects Academy in Rochester, N.Y.
