The Pittsburgh Penguins Elite Girls under-16 squad wrapped up a successful 2017-18 campaign in early April, clinching a berth in the playoffs of the National Championship tournament. A heartbreaking 3-2 loss in the first game ended the magical run, but a 31-7-4 record cemented their legacy and earned Cobina Walkland’s squad a No. 8 in the final National rankings.
Last week, the individual accolades of the players were recognized, as four players were selected to the 2018 USA Hockey under-18 Select Player Development Camp. Forwards Kaitlyn O’Donohoe (2019) and Lacy Eden (2020) join defenders Lauren Bernard (2019) and Chalyla Edwards (2019) for the trip to Biddeford, ME from June 23-29. The quartet will join 66 premier develpmental players that the United States have to offer for the chance to hone their skills amongst the best.
The trio from the Class of 2019’s eyes aren’t just on the National team: each one has a commitment to a team that finished in the top three in Division-I this past season.
Edwards will head to Madison, Wisconsin and join the perennial powerhouse Badgers program. O’Donohoe will lace up her skates for the Colgate Raiders in the fall of 2019. Team captain Bernard’s future alma-mater is none other than the two-time defending national champion Clarkson Golden Knights.
