Costabile scores two as Malvern Prep wins Class-3A State Championship

Anthony Perti celebrates as the buzzer sounds -- ED MAJOR II

CRANBERRY TWP., Pa. — Jack Costabile scored two goals in the first period and the Malvern Prep Friars defeated the North Allegheny Tigers 4-2 to secure the Class-3A Pennsylvania Cup Championship at the UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex in Cranberry on Saturday afternoon.

Nathan Spak found a rebound and fired it home at 3:17 of the first period to give North Allegheny the lead early, but it was short lived as Quinn Dougherty’s shot on a 2-on-1 at 7:09 tied the contest, Costaible’s first short-handed from the left half-wall at 7:35 gave the Friars the lead and his second at 9:38 secured a two-goal cushion for Malvern Prep. The second goal for Costabile was an innocent shot on net from the blue line that Josh Bailey couldn’t glove completely, beating the senior high.

The Friars opened up the second frame with a little bit of the same as Jimmy Kirk’s first on the power-play opened up a 4-1 lead just :20 into the frame. The Tigers started to generate momentum in the third, and at the 2:40 mark were rewarded as Connor Chi fired a shot past Anthony Perti on the power-play. As the intensity increased, the opportunities dwindled for North Allegheny in the period.

The Tigers troubles carried over to the third period as the team found themselves in penalty trouble early and often and were unable to regain any momentum in the third.
